Frau Ritter 2.0 is a multimedia installation by artist Lala Raščić, which will be exhibited from April 16 to May 3, 2025, at POGON Jedinstvo, as part of Meštrović Pavilion Visiting program. This audiovisual essay explores the symbolism and cultural prejudices associated with the concept of Woman/Snake, through a narrative that accompanies five synchronized black-and-white slide projections. The installation was originally created for the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo, where Raščić responded to the spatial context of the museum and her encounter with the botanist Hilda Ritter-Studnička. Through this work, the artist connects scientific, historical, and mythological references, investigating conceits of the the snake as animal and snake as symbol, as well as the snake’s association with the concept of the “feminine.” Using black-and-white slide film and photo-chemical processes for a media transmutation from digital to analog, Raščić makes multiple references to the history of art and the study of mythological creatures. The essay ends with a fairy tale about a snake-princess that unites all the narrative elements. The work is ultimately dedicated to feminist Jasenka Kodrnja, whose quote, cited in the work, also reflects on the relationship between culture, nature, and women.
