Locations / 2003

“Locations” are a series of videos in which the theme of location is taken as a motive treated differently in every piece. Location as a phenomenon is treated equally as place in physical-geographical space, as in the terms of Lefebvres ”spatial practice” (..a projection ‘onto the ground’ of all aspects, elements and moments of social practice) and as a place in memory. Considerations of location in these works is unseperable from the phsycological processes which are activated during the course of individual/subjective inerpretations of a specific place, which in turn obtains meaning only thru its context. The docmentary view thru the camera explores the place/location thru the objectiveness of the video image, blow-ups analitically examine the details of reality while new contexts, meaning and realities are being constructed as a result of interaction of images on the split screens. Location is unveiled as/thru a subjective event. The subjective viewpoint is in some videos underlinded with the appearance of animation which adds a hint of surrealism.
Although initially intended to be screened simultaneously, as a multi channel video installation, ”locations” are also suitable to be viewed as single channel videos in form of cinematic projection

«Location of  Play» is one video form the series entitled «Locations» on which Rascic was working for some time. The videos have for the motive the phenomenon of location which reveals itself differently in each of the videos. Location in this case has not an a-priori spatial definition and does not relate to place only as a physical characteristic. It is more a «mental place», a timeless place in memory. Lala’s locations are real, they are details of the urban lanscape of Zagreb where she lived. She explores the chosen locations and within them seeks the moments and the stories which happen on the site and define them as a location – unseperable from the psychological processes which are activated thru the subjective interpretation of a specific locality. Locations are then mental-emotional maps of a life, a reconstruction of events and places. Painted memories.
«Location of Play» introduces us with a locality in the park of Zagrebs Square of the French Revolution. In the park there is a bowling field – a location which was a part of Lala’s routine and which she would pass everyday on her bicycle.
Because of a hole in the pavement she would have to slow down, and then she would have the time to «look over» to the left, to the bowling field.
Just like a flash of a memory, the video shows us two parallel images – passage over the hole in the pavement and a glance over to the bowlers.
Two seperate micro-realities. Two micro-stories which make a location a «location». (Maja Bobar)
